LAS Week

Academically diverse and culturally rich, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the heart of learning and discovery at Iowa State!

We reach all students at ISU and also offer more than 50 majors, minors, certificates and academic programs.

LAS Week is an event to celebrate the college’s diverse academic areas in the Physical and Life Sciences, Math and Computational Sciences, Communications, Arts and Humanities, and Social Sciences.

LAS Week: March 25-29, 2024 Schedule of Events

7:45am: Flag Raising with AFROTC
Central Campus

The Iowa State University Air Force ROTC will be conducting the Flag Raising event at the Central Campus flagpole to mark the start of LAS Week.

8:00am – 10:00am: Kickoff Breakfast
Morrill Hall 2019

Kickoff Breakfast with LAS Communications, the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, and the Start Something LAS Academy. While supplies last.

12:00pm – 2:00pm: Pizza with Professors hosted by Leadership Studies
Student Innovation Center, First Floor Multipurpose Space

Join Leadership Studies for pizza and discussions with professors. All students are welcome!

12:30pm – 2:30pm: LN2 Ice Cream with Physics and Astronomy
Physics Hall main entrance

Join Physics and Astronomy for their second LAS Week liquid nitrogen ice cream event! Free to students!

8:30am – 10:00 am: Bagels Demanded, Bagels Supplied
Heady Hall 167 – Econ Undergrad Student Lounge

Join the Department of Economics for an open house with bagels, fruit, beverages. Games and other activities.  Open to all (*while supplies last).

4:10pm – 5:00pm: Sharkuterie Connections with the Start Something LAS Academy
Student Innovation Center, First Floor Atrium

“How Stigma Derails the Help Seeking Process”

David Vogel, professor of psychology and Director of the Communication Studies Program will be this semester’s speaker.

6:00pm – 7:00pm: Global Trivia Night hosted by WLC Student Ambassadors

Join the WLC Student Ambassadors for trivia from around the world! Food and beverages will be provided. Everyone is welcome!

8:00pm: Annual AMS Twister Movie Night

Our Student Chapter of AMS will be hosting a movie night where we watch Twister (1996). There will be snacks, movie bingo, and fun times for all who attend!

Enjoy popcorn, giveaways, and games! Student photo headshots will also be available during the open house. Open to all current and prospective LAS undergraduate and graduate students.

Swing by Carver 331 to grab some ice cream from the Creamery! Faculty and students will be present to chat about the Communication skills employers want in new graduates, and how a degree in Communication Studies can help you stand out.

4:00pm – 6:00pm: LAS Study Abroad Stories: Past, Present & Future

Hear from past study abroad participants about their experiences, eat snacks from around the world, and be entered into a drawing for a $250 scholarship!

7:00pm: 2023-2024 Manatt-Phelps Lecture in Political Science

John Kasich, two-term former Ohio Governor and New York Times best-selling author, will present “Socially Responsible Innovation.

He is known as a leading voice in promoting bipartisan solutions to health care reform, immigration and international trade, and has been one of the few Republicans to advocate for Medicaid’s expansion.

Resources for all LAS students such as health and wellness resources, voter registration with the Political Science Club, headshots with our LAS photographer, and more.

3:30pm – 5:30pm: Board Game Day: Ethics, Gods, and Wits
Carver Hall 205

Philosophy and Religious Studies and the Philosophy Club invites all students to stop by to play board, card, and video games to unwind or test your knowledge, logic, and ethics.

5:00pm: Flag Lowering with AFROTC
