Logic Seminar: Flexible stability and potential obstructions to soficity

Author: Lona | Image: Lona

Speaker: Peter Burton (Iowa State University)

Abstract:

Sofic groups are defined through a finite approximation procedure, and a principal direction in the research program around finding a nonsofic group is to study whether certain imperfections that may appear in these approximations can be efficiently repaired. We will describe cases where this is known to be possible and present a result due to Lewis Bowen and the speaker which constructs a nonsofic group from the (currently unverified) hypothesis that such repairs can be made for special linear groups over the integers.
